Would you vote for an atheist?

I'm curious how DU and the Religion group compare to Democrats as a whole.

There are two candidates running in the Democratic presidential primary. They have identical policies, education, age, and prior governmental service. The only difference (other than name) is their religion.

One is Christian (let's say ordinary Protestant or Catholic) and the other is an atheist.

Would you deliberately not vote for one of the two candidates?

1. Until the neocon invasion, I never paid that much attention to a candidate's religion

My vote is based on what I know of their stands on the important issues and their records. I don't care where they go to church. I care how how they say and how they demonstrate they will serve the nation.

I don't prefer him because he's an atheist; I prefer him because he's Labour. But I would never avoid voting for someone because of their religious or nonreligious status.

it would be just by being in a forum full of self-selected audience members.

When people can be anonymous it changes the lay of the land rather significantly.

for the sheer novelty of it. I don't know if I'll see an atheist president in my lifetime, but I'd kind of like to.

The reason I would vote for the atheist is to try to make history. An openly atheist President would be a milestone for us.

It is possible to have a neo-con douche of an atheist, running against a liberal Christian, in which case I'd vote for the Christian.

Of course, if it's Richard Dawkins vs. Pat Robertson, I'm voting for Dawkins every time!

Well, given that all else is equal clearly there are some things the religious candidate can't think straight about. So the atheist gets my vote.
