Its time for a sexual counterrevolution

From the article:

A friend of mine quipped on Facebook, “Are there any old famous dudes who haven’t been sexually gross?”
They are fewer by the day. With idols falling fast in media, politics and entertainment, The New Yorker’s Masha Gessen writes that a new “sex panic” might be upon us....

Thankfully, we can find in religions and secular ethics some powerful correctives to what is broken in sex culture today. First, a brief diagnosis of what has gone wrong:
We can credit the sexual revolution for honoring the joys of sex and creating space for more people to enjoy it in more ways, provided that no one is forced or harmed. But in elevating the pleasures of sex, the revolution contributed to the development of a greedy fixation on it that now prevails among some men.

Sexual assault existed prior to the sexual revolution. nt Irish_Dem Dec 2017 #1
Yes. And we don't need religion to police consensual sexuality as far as I'm concerned. emulatorloo Dec 2017 #2
Yes, religious leaders are one of the biggest groups of sexual offenders. nt Irish_Dem Dec 2017 #3

Whether we frame it as "do unto others", or "be the change..." it is our individual responsibility as adults to police ourselves.

But I believe that the author makes some good points about taking responsibility for our actions, and the author also emphasizes that this is a concern no matter a person's beliefs.

A respect for others rights must mean that our choices reflect that respect. In the case most outrageously perhaps of Weinstein, Trump, and Moore, no matter their words, their actions condemn them as predators.

But I disagree with her premise that the sexual revolution led to sexual assault and harassment.
If anything, the sexual revolution introduced the notion that women are equal sexual partners.
And made consensual sex more available to men who might have looked elsewhere.
But sexual assault is not just about sex, is also about power, sadism, etc.

The sex is secondary to the assault, so sadism and power are large factors.

People like sex. Most people don't coerce others into having sex, because most people like to have sex.

So, they'll keep right on enjoying that pleasure, I have no doubt.

Saying that Jesus doesn't want people to have sex for the fun of it is not going to keep people from doing that. What a silly article!

But obviously the author is not addressing most people, but is addressing those who show a need to be addressed.

Just as articles on rape are not generally intended as an indictment of all.

Replying in your thread is enough.

The Sexual Counterrevolution already happened. HIV/AIDS and herpes were the triggers for that. The original Sexual Revolution was quite short-lived, really. I was fortunate enough to be single and in my 20s for that revolution. It was great!

Even so, people are still enjoying sex as they choose to, despite that and sexual predation.
