this morning reminds me that referring to Jesus in a speech does not necessarily reflect the true thoughts of the person making the reference. The phrase, "lip service," comes immediately to mind. Evil is done in equal measure as good in the name of Jesus. Discernment is needed at all times.
I discerned that Trump is a hypocrite in his false piety this morning.

And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. Matthew 6:5

(146,336 posts)refer to that verse. There are many verses in Matthew that are ignored by people who claim to follow the teachings Jesus is supposed to have said. Of course, we have no idea whether they were ever spoken, or were created later by people writing about a person supposed to be Jesus.

(13,203 posts)is not the true believer along with the rest of the (to us) obviously hypocritical felons in Republican Party? We are just projecting our ethics on the blank slate of the metaphorical holy books.

(146,336 posts)His attendance at that prayer breakfast is ironic, due to that. Do you think anyone there believed him? If so, then they are naive in the extreme.
