"Dozens of evangelical leaders meet to discuss how Trump era...

has unleashed ‘grotesque caricature’ of their faith"

Source: Pulitzer Prize-winning Washington Post, by Sarah Pulliam Bailey

About 50 top leaders of major evangelical institutions will attend an invitation-only gathering this week to discuss the future and the “soul” of evangelicalism at a time when many of them are concerned their faith group has become tainted by its association with divisive politics under President Trump. It runs Monday and Tuesday.

The diverse group, which includes nationally known pastors such as Tim Keller and A.R. Bernard, is expected to include leaders of major ministries, denominations, colleges and seminaries. The gathering will take place at Wheaton College, an evangelical college outside of Chicago, according to organizer Doug Birdsall, honorary chair of Lausanne, an international movement of evangelicals.

*****

The purpose of the Wheaton meeting is to try to shift the conversation back to core questions of the faith, and Trump as an individual will not be the focus of discussion, Birdsall said. Nonetheless, the president will be the “elephant in the room,” he said, because under his leadership the term “evangelical” has become negatively associated in the minds of many Americans with regard to topics such as racism and nationalism.

*****

“When you Google evangelicals, you get Trump,” Birdsall said. “When people say what does it mean to be an evangelical, people don’t say evangelism or the gospel. There’s a grotesque caricature of what it means to be an evangelical.”

Cheeto epitomizes everything that's wrong in a human being.

Most are more interested in cozening up to the rich and powerful and feathering their own nests than doing any selfless good works for the betterment of those in need. As long as there are con men around like Trump, the religious right will ignore all his depravity and his thuggish behaviors as long as he keeps shoring up their political schemes.

Trump is as unchristian as can be. And the Evangelicals fell over their feet in order to co-opt him and pronounce him one of their's.

Who gives a fuck about Evangelicals any more? Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachmann... Those days are over.

The Evangelicals knew that their voice no longer counted in the GOP and so they willingly tied themselves to Trump for the sake of political power.

THEY WILLINGLY PERVERTED AND DISCARDED THEIR RELIGION FOR POWER.

And now they blame Trump for what THEY have done?

And NOW they’re worrying about the effects?

I have no sympathy for these people. They are foresworn, they’re rightly seen as liars and hypocrites, and the ONLY way out of their predicament is to live it down—which would require radically different behaviors than the ones they’ve been practicing for the last forty-plus years.

laughable .....

that they were worried under Obama over losing gubmint $ because they were so intolerant and bigoted against gay people. And, even worse, they were worried about being forced to provide healthcare to those evil nasty women that have sex!!!

Let them fund their own G-D healthcare and the rest of us can have single payer. As for being bigoted against gays, they have a lot of soul-searching to do in regards to "whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers ...."

That discussed the increase of evangelical support for Trump. At the same time evangelicals are leaving the church in big numbers since Trump. Only 35% of evangelicals are under the age age of 50.

Trump is basically killing the evangelical movement.

We can't afford to be dismissive and divisive.

Because it's become synonymous with right-wing hypocrite. Evangelical was a term to replace fundamentalist, which itself got negative connotations as meaning reactionary and ignorant.

So what should the new term be?

Puts them all in one box and ties it with a racist, sexist, money-grubbing bow.

For me, "evangelical" and "fundamentalist" have always denoted a particular outlook or fervor regarding Biblical interpretation, not so much "political."

For instance, Nixon's 'Southern Strategy' and the 'Reagan Democrat' were targeted at the racist underbelly in the South. They just happened to go to the only (white) church around.

That's me.

Pat Robertson, Jim Bakker and their ilk get millions of dollars repeatedly for selling Christ.

Judas was a fool for doing a one-time sale.

How many thousands of evangelical leaders are there? And we're supposed to be excited because a few dozen of them are getting together to have a chat about how their brand has been tarnished.

They're deluding themselves about the nature of the problem, anyway, and blaming everyone else but themselves. Look at this quote from Birdsall: "There’s a grotesque caricature of what it means to be an evangelical." See? It's not the evangelicals' fault people think of them as hateful hypocrites! It's just a grotesque caricature! That's the problem he thinks they need to solve.

No, Mr. Birdsall, it is not a caricature, grotesque or otherwise. The overwhelming majority of evangelicals who voted cast their ballots for Trump, and still enthusiastically support him today. Those are facts, Mr. Birdsall, and pretending they are not isn't going to accomplish a thing.

I was raised a Christian - Presbyterian. I called it "Christian Light." We could dance (the Baptists couldn't), we could sing (the Church of Christ people couldn't)- there were none of the (IMHO) ridiculous rules that some of my friends had to adhere to. We had a wonderful youth group, great activities, I was in the choir, and on and on (in a good way). It wasn't a huge part of my life (but for me) - just enough. However, the biggest plus for me was the minister. His name was David Curry. This man gave sermons (messages) that were amazing - absolutely NO Hell-fire and brimstone. The messages he gave had me captivated every Sunday. When I was a teenager, there were some tragic things going on in my family. During this time, I was caught smoking pot with my best friends (who were twins). Their mom was also good friends with my mom. She didn't want to tell my mom (because there were so many bad things going on) but she wanted me to go to an authority type person. She told me to meet with David Curry and tell him what happened. I didn't have a personal type relationship with him so I didn't know what he'd do or say. Well, he was just wonderful! I remember how comforting he was and the really good advice he gave me. This was my personal experience with Christianity. As things are now, I have no idea who these people are. They've completely lost their way. It disgusts me. I hope they can get back to the Christ-Consciousness that is supposed to be the very essence of Christianity.....

that the word really has become meaningless. A person can believe or disbelieve just about anything and still be a Christian of one kind or another, and their behavior doesn't provide any clues, either. The only thing pretty much all of them have in common is that they are sure their version of Christianity is the right one, and everyone else is doing it wrong.
