Catholics see a rallying cry for ‘religious freedom’ in ‘For Greater Glory’ film

By Lauren Markoe| Religion News Service, Published: May 24

The film shows a burning crucifix, gun-toting priests and the torture of a young boy. And the Roman Catholic hierarchy is loving it.

The film, “For Greater Glory,” hits theaters on June 1 and tells a little known chapter of Mexican history — the Cristero War of 1926 to 1929, which pitted an army of devout Catholic rebels (led in the movie by Andy Garcia) against the government of Mexican President Plutarco Calles (played by Ruben Blades).

For Catholics enraged by the Obama administration’s proposed contraception mandate, the film about the Mexican church’s fight in 1920s is a heartening and timely cinematic boost in the American church’s battle to preserve “religious freedom” in 2012.

For other Catholics and non-Catholics, the film is, more simply, action, suspense and a good cast. Besides Garcia and Blades, there’s “Desperate Housewives” star Eva Longoria and the legendary actor Peter O’Toole.

It belongs in a movie about the 1920's but it's incredible to me that people still worship things.

on top of bat-shit crazy evangelicals, Dominionists, and whatever else is still floating around. I feel like I've made a wrong turn and wound up in 1546.

According to IMDB, at least.

The K of C doesn't seem willing to publicly admit that, though they have released a shitpotful of glowing reviews, endorsements and puff pieces about FGG.

In fact, the HuffPost piece reads like a re-write of a movie press release, using the same language found elsewhere.

I also found glowing reviews at townhall.com, redstate.com and other To-The-Right-of-Josef-Goebbels sites:

"For Greater Glory" isn’t about the United States government clamping down on 1960?s leftists who advocate violence and who received money, training and help from Soviet Russia, nor about 1980?s Democrats who ran for office with funding and other help from Communist China. - redstate.com

Andy Garcia says - with a straight face - that this turkey "is not propaganda." Really? I guess that's why, in all the movie posters and stills, Garcia's wearing a crucifix only slightly smaller than his ego.

Peter O'Toole gets put up against a wall and shot - something I personally recommended after he appeared in the 2005 version of Lassie.

More of the usual Irrelevant Trivia:

In Andy Garcia's last magnum dopus of 2011, he played Sarah Palin's favorite politician - President Mikheil Saakashvili of Georgia.

I know - "Huh?"

That straight-to-the-WalMart-$5-bin flick was 5 Days of War. Apparently Garcia is Saakashvili's favorite actor! What a coincidence! Directed by Renny Harlin - remember him? So stuff blows up impressively even when there's not much reason for it.

As portrayed by Garcia, Saakashvili comes off as a cross between Abe Lincoln and FDR. Putin comes off as Vladimir The Impaler.

And as you may have guessed, 5 Days of War WAS propaganda - financed largely by the Georgian government, with the Evil Russians ruthlessly suppressing poor little Georgia. Conveniently without mentioning Georgia's invasions of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, etc.

Since it had official govt. backing, for us Armor Porn fans, the flick is full of impressive hardware - T-72 tanks with ERA armor, BTR-80 personnel carriers, Hind helicopter gunships, etc.
