Vatican attacks popular U.S. nun over sexuality book

By Philip Pullella

VATICAN CITY | Mon Jun 4, 2012 9:58am EDT

(Reuters) - The Vatican criticized a popular American nun on Monday, saying her book on sexual ethics, including topics such as masturbation and homosexuality, contradicted Catholic teaching and must not be used by Catholic educators.

The Vatican's doctrinal department, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, issued a stern "notification" about Sister Margaret A. Farley, a member of the Sisters of Mercy and a professor emeritus of Christian ethics at Yale University.

The Congregation sharply criticized Farley, saying her writings manifest a "defective understanding of the objective nature of natural moral law".

Monday's notification, signed by department head Cardinal William Levada, an American, and approved by Pope Benedict, sharply criticized Farley's award-winning 2006 book "Just Love, a Framework for Christian Sexual Ethics".

Robert P. George piece in the NYTs above.

Some of us out here amongst grassroots are wondering how synergy between the RC church and Evangelicals was created and, thus, produced political support for Bush's War, especially in 2004. The deal had to have been about anti-Women's Choice positions on SCOTUS, but those philosophical assumptions are now being extended to oppression of LGBT Civil Rights.

I think one of the important points we may see rise out of this is: Exactly WHAT is Catholic Dogma on these issues. None of this stuff is in my reading of The Nicene Creed.

12. Well, she WAS teaching at Yale's Div school, not a Catholic institution...

I have a friend who had her as her faculty adviser when she was getting her Masters at the Div School. She is an Episcopalian.

And I believe that the Yale Divinity School was founded by Congregationalists...

I am curious to see how far the Vatican will take this. They must know that they can't win out over nuns, who look more like everyone's favorite grandmas that do the priesthood.
