In 1627, the Cologne court was convinced Catherine Henot, in league with the devil, had conjured a caterpillar plague, sowed strife, and incited lust. So the postmistress was sentenced to death by torture.

385 years later, on 28 June 2012, the Cologne city council rehabilitated Catherine Henot together with 37 other women and men killed for witchcraft in Rhine city ... Since the Holy Roman Empire of the German nation lacks a legal successor, the rehabilitation has no legal consequences ... Historians estimate the number of women and men executed in Germany, for allegedly being in league with the devil, at 25,000.

Retired minister Hartmut Hegeler from Unna, who lodged the application to rehabilitate the witches executed in Cologne, was "very relieved" after the vote on Thursday. Now he wants to be a Mass celebrated in the cathedral as a gesture of reparation by the archdiocese ...

Why are all DU's defenders of the Holy Roman Empire suddenly so quiet?

Yes, mistakes happen sometimes. But the city put up a nice statue of her and said it was sorry

Catherine was sorta pissed at the time but she's put the whole thing behind her now

Can anybody clarify whether this is Men's Cologne or Women's Cologne? Thanks!

We don't burn innocents at the stake anymore! No, indeed! We send killer drones after them instead!

Why hasn't Friedrich Spee von Langenfeld been beatified yet?

Shouldn't that sentence be translated more in line with the following rough translation?

The Cologne court which sentenced in 1627 the postmistress to death after (having subjected her to) torture was convinced thereof.

(Thereof refers back to the previous sentence that indicates the connection to the devil.)

I don't know if you have ever been to Cologne, but, if not, the cathedral there is very impressive (150 m spires (approx.)) - http://www.koelner-dom.de - and is, at most, two blocks from the main train station.

Also, there is a nice art museum, Museum Ludwig, not too far (at most a couple of blocks) from the cathedral: http://www.museenkoeln.de/museum-ludwig/default.asp?lang=2 .

"fell sacrificed to the witch mania" sounds closer to me.

One small point: just in case these folk actually did follow the old religion, wouldn't a maypole dance or a bonfire be a better reparation than a mass?
