Street preachers oppose law they say keeps them off Bourbon Street after dark

By Associated Press, Updated: Friday, September 14, 2:23 PM

NEW ORLEANS — Bare breasts, drunken revelry and almost anything else is tolerated along Bourbon Street, but after dark, the city is saying street preachers are forbidden.

Two weeks ago, a small group of street preachers were arrested during a gay pride festival, perhaps the first people to be booked under a nearly year-old ordinance against aggressive solicitation on Bourbon Street. Those who crafted the law say it’s a public safety measure to help with crowd control and discourage con-artists, but the street preachers believe it’s a violation of their First Amendment rights.

Specifically, the law bans loitering on Bourbon to spread “any social, political or religious message between the hours of sunset and sunrise” ...

Bare breasts are generally not tolerated, except during Mardi Gras.

Second, Southern Decadence is something more than a Gay Pride celebration and these street preachers have been known to be particularly aggravating and aggressive during this event. This has led to some pretty ugly confrontations in the past, as these *preachers* often carry signs very offensive to the GLBT community and the GLBT community has zero tolerance for this, particularly during this event.

In general, the city and law enforcement do an excellent job of controlling things in the French Quarter. This law prohibits a whole host of activities, but applies only to Bourbon Street. The *preachers* knew the law before they went there and decided to do it anyway.

I couldn't get to the article through you link, but did get to it here:
