In his famous treatise on ethics, dedicated to his son, Aristotle says that one swallow does not make a summer. He says this to illustrate his point that one isolated good action does not make a good person. Even the worst criminals can be kind to their friends or their cat. Adolf Hitler adored his dog.
Instead, Aristotle teaches that a truly ethical person is someone who consciously has chosen a particular way of acting as a habitual, deeply rooted part of their character.
They constantly seek after truth and to do what is compassionate, just and right in each situation.
They take time regularly to reflect upon their words and actions so as to learn from their mistakes.

(13,029 posts)have you learned from on this board? What have you done to "constantly seek after truth", rather than close yourself off from points of view that disturb your preconceived notions too severely?

(11,735 posts)Are you constantly seeking truth? In what ways has participating in this forum altered your preconceived notions?
The article was addressing believers, but surely even atheists spend time reflecting on what they believe and why they beleive it. Or is atheism by rote a norm?

And if you think atheism happens by rote, you understand even less than I thought.

(13,029 posts)You know I never claimed you said that, don't you? I said (if you need your memory refreshed) that IF you think that atheism happens by rote, your understanding is very poor. IF. You do comprehend the implication of that word, don't you? Since you asked "is atheism by rote a norm?", one might conclude that you're deeply confused on that point.

is that I indicated I thought atheism happens by rote. Or it was just a lame lead in to an another insult.
I'm guessing both in order to cover all bases.

(13,029 posts)Is that your question clearly indicated that you thought atheism MIGHT happen by rote. The fact that you even needed to ask the question, that you even considered that both cases were reasonable possibilities, is the point.
But keep squirming. You do it so well.
