Letters: prayer and politics

"In response to “Pastors to send IRS message on political speech” (Oct. 6): So Pastor Garlow wants the freedom to endorse a venture capitalist for president in the name of biblical values without fear of IRS reprisal? Personally, I think the IRS should cease prohibiting churches from endorsing candidates for political office and just tax them like the businesses that they are."

"As for ministers using the Christian gospels to justify the excesses of capitalism, what would Jesus do if he were an American citizen today? Would he decry high taxes and overregulation? I doubt it. While Jim Garlow might have the Messiah ring the bell to open the New York Stock Exchange, my guess is Jesus might instead help the poor and hungry. Blessed are the poor even as they are demeaned as “the 47 percent.”

is getting rich(er), is indeed a business that offers nothing tangible, guarantees that can't be verified, and a great deal of hatred; it has done much to divide the country and has done nothing to redeem itself.*

Tax the bastards. Enough of this nonsense.

*Yes, some churches aren't money-grubbing, doing actual work to help those in need. Yes, some "aren't real Christians," but the vast majority are profiting off the poor even as thet claim to "help."

I am not in favor of taxing churches. Churches do a lot of good. If your pastor lives like a king get a new church.
