Same-sex marriage does not obstruct your religious liberty

Kathy Baldock is a straight, Evangelical Christian, living in Reno, Nev. She is the mother of two straight adult children and has no close LGBT family members, yet works to repair the breach between the the church and the LGBT Christian community.

On Election Day 2012, four states, Maryland, Maine, Minnesota and Washington will all have marriage equality on their ballots. Maryland, Maine and Washington would be the first states to enact marriage equality through voter referendums. In Minnesota, the issue on the ballot is an anti-gay marriage equality constitutional amendment.

Many of the “religious liberty” or “religious freedom” arguments against same-sex marriage equality depict scenarios using threatening language: “Homosexual couples will be banging down the doors of your local church demanding to be married in your sanctuaries if this legislation passes.”

This is just not true.

What is up for vote in states is civil marriage. A civil marriage is a legal contract within a state; it is not a religious marriage.

That last paragraph bears repeating:

What is up for vote in states is civil marriage. A civil marriage is a legal contract within a state; it is not a religious marriage.

...be forced to perform gay marriages. They can keep the "sanctity" of their rituals intact.

If these religions institutions were so concerned about the sanctity of heterosexual marriage, they ought to make divorce punishable by excommunication, burning at the stake or stoning. That ought to put those "special somethings" back into heterosexual marriage: guilt, fear and intimidation. You know, things that those religions are really good at.

some on this board are so enslaved to homophobic Catholic dogma that they won't stand up and openly declare their support for the legalization of gay marriage, as any decent person should.

They know this. What marriage equality -- or anything for that matter that even appears to conflict with standing dogma -- does threaten is antiquated belief systems that exist now only to perpetuate themselves. As Science and logical thought reveal the secrets of the Universe, what is also being revealed is just how irrelevant these antiquated belief systems truly are. Gods and their "profits" are human created. What were revered as Gods two thousand years ago are now recognized as myth and superstition. And this is course that the Gods and prophets of today will also follow: they will fade into the twilight of myth and superstition.

They fear ANYTHING OR ANYONE that cast light upon their relevancy.

There are no gods.
There are no demons.
There is no heaven and there is no hell.
There is only our real, natural world all around us.
Religion is but myth and superstition.
Religious conviction hardens hearts.
Religious faith enslaves minds.
