Mormonism on Space Travel...Planet Kolob

Mormon apostle, the late Bruce R. McConkie, reminds us that in Mormon theology God created "worlds without number". He also reminds us that Mormons believe that "there live aliens on other planets unknown to us". McConkie tells us that these planets are "inhabited by male and female humanoids who are redeemed with immortality and offered eternal life through the power of Heavenly Father."

Mormon Theologians agree that God lives on a distant planet, the planet KOLOB. It's located in the constellation Cancer, sector 2813. Kolob means "the first creation" -- which is "nearest to the celestial, or the residence of God", (Abraham 3:2 – 3, 9) as McConkie assures us. It is called the Celestial Kingdom.

1. I simply cannot fathom why this is stranger than the Virgin Birth, Satan, the Anti-Christ, etc.

Its likely there are other lifeforms on other planets, though I don't hold much confidence that they are of the "humanoid" type.

3. It's stranger because it's mixing genres. Religions should either go Sci-Fi or Fantasy...

...not both. It's just not tidy.

5. You lost me at "Mormon theologians agree...." Mormon theologians don't agree on anything.

They are much like other theologians in that respect. The location of Kolob is certainly up for grabs, it is entirely uncertain whether Kolob is a planet or a star, and rather than "God" living there we should specify somehow "The Chief God" or parent god who fathers the rest. For examples, our local God and Jesus. Oh, yeah, and his brother Satan.

Even odder are the Mormon claims that our sun and moon are inhabited. Those two are starting to look improbable in view of modern science, in spite of the Mormon prophecy that man would never reach the moon.

...Glen Larson borrowed a lot of the science fiction from the Book of Mormon!
