Secular victory: Louisiana voucher program ruled unconstitutional

In a victory for secular Americans, a controversial Louisiana voucher program that would use taxpayer money to fund private schools devoted to Christian indoctrination and training was ruled unconstitutional by a state judge on Friday, Nov. 30.

The ruling comes as major blow to Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal's efforts to overhaul the state’s education system, and represents a major defeat to Christian fundamentalists and others who favor taxpayer money being used to fund Christian schools, schools that often teach children that Biblical creationism is a legitimate scientific theory.

The Chicago Tribune reports Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal described the ruling as being "wrong-headed" and "a travesty for parents across Louisiana who want nothing more than for their children to have an equal opportunity at receiving a great education."

However, secular Americans and others who respect the separation of church and state embedded in the U.S. Constitution celebrate the ruling.

As he continues to pursue his hoped for national status, he might be grateful to be able to move more to the center.

Whatever else he is, he is not stupid.
