Buddhas in 3-D: Technology and the battle to preserve Asia's heritage

Viewers look at a digital representation of a 1,500 year old Buddhist grotto.

Hong Kong (CNN) -- A darkened room in a Hong Kong university building is an unlikely portal into an ancient world.

But with the touch of an iPad Mini, the space is digitally transformed into a 1,500-year-old Buddhist grotto. Its walls decorated with exquisite but faded paintings of enlightened beings, dancers and musicians.

Another swipe and a pair of 3-D glasses brings the cave to life.

Vivid pigments show how the cave must have looked when the paint first dried and animation and magnification reveal the tiniest of details.

Older than we are, in a very true sense.

We are not the same people who did these works, we are only the same species.

My opinion is that he is very good at them, but I can't find anyone who agrees with me about Grizzly Man.

Have you seen it? Did you think it was an elaborate hoax?

I treasure that film, my first love is Fitzcarraldo, then Burden of Dreams, then Dieter Must Fly, then all the rest of his films.

He is a genius of an emotional anthropologist, though he would say he is just a film maker. yeah right.

"Real" anthropologists wish they had his perspective and insight...

My only complaint, he isn't funded enough to produce as many films as his vision could support, but then his insistence on integrity could never provide for a high level of production.

He is the black truffle of filmmakers!

He's supposed to be in San Diego in July....

in 3D down in the Village, a remarkable film.

But I think it showed, we are the same people.
