VATICAN CITY (RNS) The Vaticans culture ministry warned on Thursday (Jan. 31) that the Catholic Church risks losing future generations if it doesnt learn how to understand young people, their language and their culture.
The Pontifical Council for Culture invited sociologists, web experts and theologians to a three-day, closed-door event on Feb. 6-9 aimed at studying emerging youth cultures.
According to a working paper released ahead of the meeting, the church risks offering answers to questions that are not there if it doesnt learn the cultural reality of young people.
A study released last October by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life showed that young people are increasingly disconnected from religion, with one in three Americans aged 18-29 describing themselves as religiously unaffiliated.

(1,944 posts)the 20th Century - the 21st may be a little too much of a stretch.
Actually, people don't need to be threatened with the idea of hell and damnation to live a good life. People today do not need to be lectured on sex and married life by someone who has absolutely no idea of what that means. As for sin - well the Catholic church is able to relate their, but they are too busy pretending they are "holier than thou". People today want openness and honesty (something the Catholic church seems set against - for example their 3-day closed-door event), especially when there are scandals involving the assault on our children.

(146,218 posts)What people want is some transparency. The Vatican strikes me as one of the most secretive organization on the planet. I agree - people want openness and honesty, particularly after an institution like this has been involved in such heinous behavior.

(1,451 posts)This winter we have hosted several Catholic confirmation groups consisting of 30 to over 100 middle schoolers. The adults--priests, nuns, and lay people--are very engaged with these young people. As with most denominations, I think corporate religion rarely reflects the reality of local churches. And I think that's a good thing.
