If you think the new Pope is going to be any less of a dick than the old one and any bit more progressive, you are fooling yourself. The current Pope picks those that will pick his successor. Think he picked conservatives or progressives? Guess who the conservative assholes the last few popes picked will pick as the successor this current conservative asshole? But, hey, there's always hope for change

I'm sure a lot of people will be pushing for a Liberation Theology cardinal, but they'll pick another Opus Dei Catholic Fundie.

The right wingers have the Conclave cornered.

The Nigerian did a lot of work on interfaith stuff and taught logic. The other two are known as progressives.

And in this case, the ex-pope will actually be around to ensure that exactly the guy he wants (and it will be a guy, by all accounts) will end up wearing the beanie. Does anyone think that a living pope won't get his way on that with the College?
