In response to the unorthodox departure of Pope Benedict XVI -- who on Feb. 28 became the first pope to resign from the papacy in six centuries and the subsequent gathering of 115 male cardinals to designate his replacement, a small group of Catholic women, and a few men, gathered just before noon outside of St. Louis Cathedral on Sunday to advocate for equal rights in the church.
The demonstration, organized by the local chapter of the Women's Ordination Conference (WOC), consisted of prayers, songs and a call for gender equality in the Catholic church that includes the ordination of women as priests, and an expanded effort to include womens voices in the church and in the Vatican.
On Tuesday, when the conclave officially begins, a chapter of WOC will travel to Rome and send up a plume of pink smoke a direct response to white smoke that will rise once a new pope is selected to draw attention to the groups cause. There will be similar demonstrations in nine cities across the United States.
(On Tuesday) the women of the church, and the members of the Womens Ordination Conference, send up pink smoke to protest the lack of womens voices at the conclave, and to protest the ban on women from all leadership and decision making positions in the church, said Kim Nunez, clad in a pink T-shirt. We recognize this 'election' as the celebration of patriarchy, and the painful reminder of the misogyny of the hierarchy.

(49,533 posts)Even those much-touted "nuns on a bus" got off the bus and went right back to work. Did anything change?
Thats my opinion

(49,533 posts)You stay classy, Chuck.
Perhaps instead of just lashing out with personal attacks, you can document what, exactly, the "Nuns on the Bus" accomplished? Did the RCC leadership change any policies based on their protest?
And then you can explain how effective a protest is if, after the protest is done, you go right back to being a subservient cog in the machine.
I suspect you'll do neither though, because you seem more interested in bashing those who disagree with you than actually solving problems.

(19,705 posts)Feel good demonstrations do little unless they are backed up by action.
You call that "crapping" on it, I call it a reality check.
Stunts like this pink smoke accomplish about as much as prayer does.

(19,705 posts)I'm gonna go ahead and not miss any meals, though. You, me, and Charles all know the reality of the situation; until the laity begin to withhold their time, money, and support, change will happen at an evolutionary pace, at best.

(71,265 posts)do. The RCC is missing out on capable people who can minister to God's children. I wish they would get over their doctrine and make the leap as many other denominations have done. Women clergy rock!
The Mother Superior at my school could have wiped the floor with the Bishop without breaking a sweat.
