UPDATED: Cardinal Wuerl: Church Treats Gay Marriage Of Catholics Like Divorce

PEMA LEVY 10:04 AM EDT, SUNDAY MARCH 31, 2013

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, explained Sunday that gay Catholics who marry their partners may remain part of the Catholic Church even though the church will not recognize their marriage. In an appearance on "Fox News Sunday," Wuerl explained this is similar to how the church treats Catholics who are divorced and remarried.

"We do that same thing with people who are married, divorced and remarried," Wuerl said on the church's refusal to recognize same-sex marriages. "We say, you know, you're still part of the family, but we can't recognize that second marriage… and it's never been a great problem."

Update:

Cardinal Wuerl: Belief In Traditional Marriage Is Not ‘Bigotry

’PEMA LEVY 10:19 AM EDT, SUNDAY MARCH 31, 2013

Cardinal Donald Wuerl, the archbishop of Washington, argued Sunday that Catholics' traditional beliefs about sex and marriage do not amount to "bigotry" and said there should be a place in American society for people with those beliefs.

"There has to be room enough in the society as large, as free and as pluralistic as America to make space for all of us," Wuerl said on "Fox News Sunday."

"The only thing I worry about is someone saying to me, 'You, because you believe that sex is intended for marriage and because you believe that marriage is indissoluble and because you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman,' that somehow you don't belong here. That somehow, this is bigotry or this is hate speech. That's what I worry about," Wuerl said.

and the church does not recognize civil weddings.

If you are a Catholic in Mexico, you have to get married twice.

Completely separate systems, one secular, one religious.

PS: Guess which of those two weddings is recognized as the legitimate one by the US government?

Hint: It's not the one performed in the church.

So their position is one of continued bigotry against gay people.

that Richard Dawkins is a bigot, for things that he never actually said, and that atheists here who don't denounce him (for things that he never actually said) are, by some imagined asociation, also despicable bigots.

It makes one wonder why the same "logic" could not be applied to people here who don't denounce the Catholic Church for bigoted things it actually HAS said, and for bigoted positions that it holds proudly and unalterably.

The thing is that they try to have the law so that the state doesn't recognise it either. They don't campaign to have divorce banned; they shouldn't campaign against same-sex marriage.

I might have to borrow from your answer, if dinner conversation takes that uncomfortable 'veer', today.

if they didn't think it would damage them too much and make them look too much like anachronistic dinosaurs that were determined to control as many aspects of people's lives as they could get away with. Same for laws allowing the sale of artificial contraceptives.
