Organized Religion – Do You Still Practice?

When scandals come to light, much like the latest one concerning the silence of Archbishop Myers of the Newark Archdiocese over the priest who groped a young boy some years ago; usually the response is, “I stopped going years ago!”

So, whether it’s scandal, non-belief, or what have you; have you given up going to Mass, shul, whatever?

It doesn’t help whenever you see religions act like they’re a part of corporate America, albeit without the tax implications.

For instance, just this past week, the ongoing scandal progressed in the case of Farther Michael Fugee’s non compliance of an agreement made with the Bergen County prosecutor. He agreed not to have any interaction with kids following his trial for having groped a 13 year old boy during “wrestling.”

"I am the way, the truth, and the life . . . " John 14:6, with some emphasis upon life/living as I encounter it.

For us, it's a demonstration of social and neighborhood support, as well as reinforcing that we can translate Jesus' actions in meaningful ways in today's world. Our congregation isn't large, but we are (and apparently have historically been - 356yrs) a rather liberal and politically-minded congregation all the way back to the Revolutionary War. Kinda cool. It's refreshing being around a bunch of people who believe -- both Biblically and politically -- as yourself.

Plus, church has been so much better since we replaced the evangelical guy. People were leaving by droves. He covered up a lot of his 'beliefs' until he was actually installed and then let'r rip. He actually had the gall to take my hubby and I out to lunch to ask us why people didn't like him (talk about being put on the spot). Then he charged the lunch to the church. Yeah, he didn't last long.

ice and snow underfoot, and if necessary when traveling.

Personalities of the presiders or other members of the faith don't affect my desire to be there.

I've made a firm, conscious decision that this will be my practice for the rest of my days, just as I one day long ago made the decision to remain faithful to my spouse.
