PHOENIX A little religion could soon go a long way in avoiding unpopular government mandates.
The Arizona Senate passed a trio of bills Wednesday that seek to lower property taxes for religious institutions and make it easier for some people to sue over the First Amendment, much to the chagrin of civil liberties and secular groups who claim Arizona lawmakers are violating the U.S. Constitution by favoring the faithful over non-believers.
The Republican majority passed the bills amid opposition from Democratic lawmakers and with little debate. The legislation was backed by the powerful Center for Arizona Policy, which wields significant influence over conservative lawmakers in the Legislature.
Opponents of the measures argue religious institutions shouldnt receive special privileges not afforded to all Arizonans. They claim the bills seek to legalize discrimination and to stall the ongoing battle to extend equal rights to gay and secular communities.

(15,189 posts)The First Church of Democratic Politics, or call it ACORN Apostles. Let's be open about our "free speech". No GOP ALLOWED. No holy days including Christmas. The ONLY holy day is an election day. With tax credits, we could open homeless shelters and get future voters, and campaign workers. All in the name of democracy. Amen!

(3,818 posts)Whenever Pagans ask to give the benediction before city counsel meetings, the first they do is take the benediction off the table, saying no one would get to do one, which is for the best actually. Or, as one city did, state that only Judeo-Christo religions are the only ones allowed.
There are quite a few pagan groups in AZ - let's see where this goes.
