Celebrations of marriage equality, court rulings continue across church-picture of my bishop marchin

[Episcopal News Service] Steve Price’s white gardenia boutonniere and diamond pinkie ring were bittersweet tributes among a sea of joy at the June 27 “Celebration of Equality” at St. John’s Pro-Cathedral in Los Angeles.

From Los Angeles to New York, worshippers gathered across the church to celebrate in very public and very personal ways, after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and ruled California’s ban on gay marriage (Proposition 8) unconstitutional.

The court’s decisions extended many previously denied federal benefits to same-sex couples married in the U.S. states that allow such unions and paved the way for gay marriages to resume in California.

I am so proud of my church and my bishop. At the end of the march my bishop and other clergy came to my parish and we had an evensong in honor of Pride Day.

One guy I know who goes there, who is pretty liberal, didn't agree with that because he thought it was "too divisive" and might piss off some people (not likely, considering how liberal that place is). I don't agree - it's a civil rights issue, maybe one of the last ones left, and considering how many churches are still bigoted and hateful about LGBT issues, I think this church did a good thing by advertising to the whole city that they aren't like that. I'm not religious but I think it's great when a church does something that actually seems consistent with what Christianity purports to be about.

Change happens--what we see now is the result of dedicated effort by Episcopal laity and clergy over a couple decades. Congratulations to all who have worked for this.

Here's hoping other religious bodies who remain obstructionist will take note and learn from the Episcopal Church's example.

Keep up the good work! I hope other churches will one day follow the example your church is setting.
