Freedom From Religion Foundation expands space, staff as legal battles pile up
Fighting legal battles over the separation of church and state keeps the Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation busy. Very busy.
The organization, which takes on First Amendment legal issues regarding the separation of church and state (along with promoting nontheism), has been so busy that it increased its staff in recent years and has outgrown its current site at the corner of West Washington Avenue and North Henry Street.
FFRF co-president and co-founder Annie Laurie Gaylor says the foundation is expanding its physical space and will quadruple its square footage when the construction of its new adjoining building is completed in 2014.
Gaylor said the foundation is nearing 20,000 members and has 13 permanent staff positions. That's quite a jump from 1976, when Gaylor and her mother, Anne Nicol Gaylor, founded the organization.
