Actress dances after alleged Scientology abuse

Leah Remini danced Monday night in her quest to win the coveted mirror-ball trophy on Dancing with the Stars. Fan support combined with judges’ scores have sustained her in the competition, now in its fifth week. But, fans may be voting for her for something other than her ability to Foxtrot, Samba or Cha-cha-cha.

During the summer of 2013, the TV actress, known for her role on the CBS sitcom "The King of Queens", parted ways with the Church of Scientology. She had been a member since her childhood. While there, she says she was told how to live and taught that whatever happens to her is her fault.

Remini made her decision to cut her ties to Scientology after her concerns about the disappearance of a friend, Shelly, the wife of the church’s current leader, David Miscavige, went unanswered. In a related incident, she was profanely verbally abused by another high-ranking leader in the church. Since her departure, she reports that many friends have cut ties with her.

Joining the season 17 cast of "Dancing with the Stars", Remini said, "The church is looking for me to fail, so they can say to their parishioners, 'See what happens when you leave the church?'" Her TV dance partner and choreographer, Tony Dovolani, was surprised at how deeply she was affected by these experiences. He responded "I am here to make sure she doesn't"
