When Pope Francis washes women's feet, arguments follow. Who's right?

On Thursday evening, in a familiar reprise of an ancient rite, Bishop Robert Morlino of Madison, Wis., will wash the feet of 12 men, all seminarians, a recreation of Jesus' action at the Last Supper, when he washed the feet of his disciples and, according to Catholic doctrine, formally instituted the priesthood.

That same evening, thousands of miles away, Pope Francis will also observe the Holy Thursday rite, though not in a cathedral like Morlino but at a center for people with disabilities. There, he will wash the feet of a number of residents, all laypeople, perhaps some of them women and even non-Christians or nonbelievers.

Francis did something similar last year, shortly after his election, when he stunned church observers by traveling to a juvenile detention center outside Rome and washing the feet of 12 young people, two of them women and two of them Muslims.

More than a few tradition-minded Catholics were aghast at the pope's example, and they welcomed Morlino's effort to hold the line against innovations, at least in his Wisconsin diocese.

I guess RW fundies are not the only ones who haven't actually read the New Testament, yet proclaim to speak "FOR" Jesus.

Really? You aren't sure to what I am referring?

Surely you aren't one who believes Jesus was a misogynistic, classist, 1%er, as apparently do many of the Pope's detractors.

6. Frankly, I'm not sure what you're referring to in half your posts in GD.

As it is, you're now in a safe haven group.

Along those lines, why don't you state directly what you're trying to say, without smileys if you can.

I am clearly calling out those (Wisconsin and elsewhere) who are castigating the Pope for setting the example that he is and which, is very clearly consistent with the teachings of Jesus.

Clearly. Which is why I asked in my first post (as per the headline of your linked article), how anyone could be asking WHO is right. Seems to me that is obvious.

I didn't make a O'Liely loofah joke, but seriously addressed the topic you presented.

Yet, I am the one with whom you took offense and felt was posting inconsistent with this group? Umm, ok.

Unlike GD, this group doesn't require snark, ambiguity or posturing to make a point. People are free to make direct statements without being concerned the statement will be met with that. It's a refreshing and imo productive change.

Yes, what you said was not clear. Now it is.

in washing seminarian's feet which is very symbolic of Jesus' action.

Even so, the message of humility and service that Jesus gives by His action IMO fully justifies a priest washing the feet of women and non-believers. It reinforces the message He came for all.

As an aside, I have been selected to participate in the foot washing at our parish. It is the first time I will be directly involved and it stresses me a bit. I'm going to wear sandals though temps will be near freezing; I don't want to have a dirty sock.
