Protesters holding signs promoting human rights for all citizens lined Lahser Road in front of Marian High School on Sunday morning to support a gay, pregnant teacher who was fired from the Catholic girls school.
Barbara Webb, 33, taught chemistry for nine years and coached sports at the high school in Bloomfield Hills until, she said, she was fired last month because of her nontraditional pregnancy.
She took to Facebook to announce her dismissal, urging people to stand up for change. The post was shared more than 1,000 times and support has swelled for the teacher.
More than 100 people attended Sundays nearly two-hour rally.
We value human diversity, said Amanda Ruud McVety, 29, of Birmingham, a 2002 Marian graduate who organized the rally to coincide with morning masses at nearby St. Regis Catholic Church. Its time to show that through actions and through words. Its time we look at (homosexuals) as equals and not shame them for who they are.
