Over the past few years, the marriage equality landscape has rapidly shifted around the globe.
Just last week, Ireland became the first nation in the world to pass marriage equality through a national referendum. However, The New York Times writer Frank Bruni argued that there is one thing that Ireland and several other countries with marriage equality have in common: they all have a large and vibrant Roman Catholic community.
According to Bruni, Countries with a Catholic majority or plurality make up half of those where two men or two women can now wed or will soon be able to.
While the Catholic Church hierarchy maintains that sex and marriage are intended for procreation only, Catholics are falling out of line with the Vatican and instead uniting with the greater Catholic community in support of marriage equality.
