How does one become a messianic rabbi? Just get up one morning and decides to rent a hall and anoint oneself? Do these "rabbis" even study anything?

(11,108 posts)this guy had, at one point been a rabbi before he converted to Christianity. It is not surprising that his rabbinical credentials have been revoked. The bottom line is the guy is a Christian in a tallit.
Pence having this "rabbi" say a prayer at his meeting was an insult to Judaism and the dead at Living Tree.

(1,777 posts)He became a "Messianic Jewish" "rabbi" after going to a Christian seminary. In other words, he became a "rabbi" after becoming a Christian.

(11,108 posts)How insulting to Jews. This putz is so fragile that he can't hear a kaddish from a rabbi so he has a fake rabbi say a Christian prayer.
When there are eleven dead Jews, the correct response is either a Jewish prayer or no prayer at all.

(3,051 posts)But my son drives me to a rather distant town once a month on Friday so I can walk to and participate in an Orthodox shul (Lubavitch) for evening services, Shabbos, and then Sunday school. (It was part of the deal in agreeing to leave NYC.)
There are several converts at the shul -- very serious Jewish men. More Jewish than many people born Jewish. Spectacular cantor, in fact.
To a man, they were evangelical, became "messianic", became informed and observant, and then became actually Jewish, leaving behind their former beliefs.
I really don't consider the existence of messianic "Jews" as a problem or insulting; they are a rich source of very good converts.
If nothing else, by acting Jewish and adopting Jewish beliefs and practices, they come to understand us very well, and act as a bridge and buffer against gentile hostility.
The only time I am offended is when they present themselves to be something that they are not. False advertising.
