How YouTube became an open, lucrative stage for anti-Semitic conspiracy theories

WASHINGTON — Spend some time on YouTube and you can learn quite a bit about Jews.

They are responsible for the assassination of John F. Kennedy; they are behind the worldwide distribution of pornography; they are the enemies of the Catholic Church; and they peddle an undue influence on American policy — the United States Congress, for instance, is controlled by Jewish money.

At least, that’s what you might think if you watch — and take to heart — the hours and hours of easily available YouTube videos that promote foul anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.

Despite the video-sharing website’s June 2019 crackdown on hate speech, in which it updated its policy to prohibit videos that advance ideologies such as white supremacy, clips which deny historical atrocities including the Holocaust, or posts justifying discrimination against other protected classes, there remains a vast reservoir of bigoted invective and extremism on the platform.

That is a good policy imnsho. I find the wish to gag anything one doesn’t want to hear illiberal. I’m a product of the Free Speech Movement. It’s a tradition I intend to continue. Now when the ACLU took the side Citizens United beCause the Supreme Court had defined money as 1st Amenment territory I take pause. There I think they’re working on bad precedent. But Free Speech is a good thing.

No bigotry/insensitivity
Members are expected to respect diversity and demonstrate an appropriate level of sensitivity when discussing related topics. Racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, or other forms of bigoted intolerance are not permitted.

Support Democrats
Do not post support for Republicans or independent/third-party "spoiler" candidates. Do not state that you are not going to vote, or that you will write-in a candidate that is not on the ballot, or that you intend to vote for any candidate other than the official Democratic nominee in any general election where a Democrat is on the ballot. Do not post anything that smears Democrats generally, or that is intended to dissuade people from supporting the Democratic Party or its candidates. Don't argue there is no difference between Republicans and Democrats.

Don't peddle right-wing talking points, smears, or sources
Do not post right-wing talking points or smears. Do not post content sourced from right-wing publications, authors, or pundits. Exceptions are permitted if you provide a clear reason for doing so that is consistent with the values of this website.

Those are just some of the policies of this site. Do those rules not "interfere" with your "definition" of 'free speech'?

You are conflating "free speech/1stA" with "being able to say whatever crosses your mind at any given point in time." The 1st Amendment applies to the GOVERNMENT not private businesses, they can limit speech. Does your support of unfettered free speech include relaying information which is false and used to inflame bigotry against Jews (or others for that matter...or is it just Jews)?
