(Jewish Group) America's 7.5M Jews are older, whiter and more liberal than the country as a whole

(THIS IS THE JEWISH GROUP! RESPECT!!)

In the past seven years, the American Jewish population has grown 10 percent.

It remains a population that is mostly liberal, college educated and overwhelmingly white. And it’s not getting any younger.

This is all according to a new American Jewish population estimate of the 48 contiguous U.S. states put out by Brandeis University’s Steinhardt Social Research Institute. The center published similar studies in 2012 and 2015.

---snip---

Among the 11 percent of American Jews who are not white, 2 percent are black, 5 percent are Hispanic and 4 percent are another ethnicity.

--snip--

There are more than twice as many Jewish liberals (42 percent) as Jewish conservatives (20 percent). Moderates comprise 37 percent of Jews. As a whole, 38 percent of Americans identify as conservative and 24 percent as liberal.

There is no state where there are more Jewish Republicans than Jewish Democrats, though Mississippi comes closest. Some 33.4 percent of Mississippi Jews identify as Republican, while 35.8 percent identify as Democrat. Nearly 32 percent of Wyoming Jews also identify as Republican.

Thanks for posting this. I read the article.

I'm curious as to how Jews are increasing in both age and raw numbers, with fewer young people. Maybe more older folks are converting? I know several who converted in their 40's or 50's.

Also, many who have one Jewish parent might identify as Jewish, at least racially if not religiously. And I know of quite a few kids who are Jewish and bi-racial, most being raised as Jews in some way. I also know several younger (under 25) folks who always considered themselves as half Jewish, and decided to embrace that heritage and went through conversion to become practicing Jews. And several others from mixed marriages, including some of my mixed cousins in their 60's and Jewish cousins mixed kids, in their 30's or 40's, who didn't always identify as Jews but acknowledge it is part of their heritage, if not their religion. So as they get older they may identify as Jewish whereas they didn't when they were younger.(Those examples would increase the number of Jewish adults and not Jewish children.)

And I also know too many Jewish conservative republicans. (One is too many LoL) My father was one.
But I know a lot more liberal Jews, even in my red southern corner of the US. So that cheers me, even as I am frustrated by and at odds with the Jewish republican types. I prefer the synagogue in the neighboring "liberal" town to the one in my repug town.
