It feels like being excluded from the freedom of religion protections. It also feels like the first step in "registration".

I don't understand all the organizations who are talking about this as such a wonderful thing.

IMHO, most jewish organizations are seriously concerned about the "under 30" generations and their weakening relationship with Israel. Again, IMHO, there is a perception that relationship is being driven by the BDS campus movement and this is being pitched as a way to curtail that. There's no consideration of the possibility that the weakening relationship is due, in part (possibly large part) by the way Israel's right wing government is being perceived among younger US Jews.

I don't like this one bit.

I suggest this: Trump’s executive order protecting Jewish students (and the controversy), explained.

I see this two-fold; it is an attempt to curb BDS (which, personally, I hate, but should be protected speech...up to a point), and this is basically a slap against Obama, again, by indicating his policy "wasn't enough."

ETA: The actual Executive Order

ETA: The 2010 Department of Education Declaration

This is, IMO, a way to attack university funding if said university does not "fall into line".

but that would protect Muslims, Hindus, Buddhists, et al. Probably would have led to adding gender / sexual orientation as well.

Their actual intent is clear, despite the bullshit justification.

I honestly didn't know religion wasn't protected by that law. I am not surprised that sexual orientation isn't covered. However, I think too many are making a mountain out of a molehill.

This morning, Jewish Insider obtained a draft of the order that Trump will sign. Nowhere in the order does it explicitly define Jews as a nationality, but calls for the enforcement of “Title VI against prohibited forms of discrimination rooted in anti-Semitism as vigorously as against all other forms of discrimination prohibited by Title VI.” So, the text implies: Jews can be perceived as a race or having a common national origin, in order to receive protection under Title VI.

And .. it's still a sh*tty idea, and confusing mess. The administration is going to try to establish "discrimination" against Jewish students (under Title VI) by institutions that entertain or enact any form of BDS actions. This would seem to be a stretch as far as the real world and real discrimination goes .. but welcome to civil rights enforcement under your current administration.
