50th Anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Future Nuclear Security Challenges

October marks the 50th Anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a time when our nation almost went to nuclear war. With threats from North Korea, Iran, and terrorist groups, could this happen again?

Dr. Martin Hellman, Professor Emeritus of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, will discuss his recent report, Fifty Years After the Cuban Missile Crisis: Time to Stop Bluffing at Nuclear Poker (co-published by FAS and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation), at a briefing hosted by the Federation of American Scientists on Thursday, October 18, 2012.

The new report highlights:
- Events and risks in 1962 leading up to the crisis;
- Current nuclear security risks to the United States;
- National security policy recommendations for the United States to effectively deal with future nuclear threats.
