and they offered extra longevity to the soda bottle by putting old film cans over the caps. Since nobody's using film these days, another solution will have to be found to stop the solar degradation of the bottle caps.

Lighting where there is no electricity available is also problematic. An ingenious solution for powering LED lights is here:



Once it goes into production and the price drops, it can be a significant improvement in the bush over the expensive and dangerous kerosene lamp people now use.
