Ancient art: French produce replica of stunning cave paintings

Story here

From the article:

President Francois Hollande toured the site on Friday - a copy of the closely-guarded Grotte Chauvet in the Ardeche region of southern France.

The original is closed to the public. The copy, at nearby Vallon-Pont d'Arc, is expected to attract many tourists.

The paintings are so old that they're likely to have been done by Neanderthals, since the bulk of the migration of Cro-Magnon types didn't occur for another 100,000 years and some of the drawings have been dated to 150,000 years old.

It's another nail in the coffin of the notion that Neanderthals were tiny brained oafs with limited speech and no discernible culture.
