This is amazing. The Lyre bird imitates sounds--usually other birds and sounds in nature.
This Lyre bird lived next to a construction site. You can hear him imitating power tools and even construction workers who are whistling and talking. Really cool!

(24,411 posts)that birds display these unusual noises in order to attract mates. A vast array of sounds coming from a bird, indicates that this bird "has been around" and is intelligent--and thus a more attractive mate to female birds.

(20,585 posts)That's kind of funny really.
We have a peacock roaming our neighborhood now and he sounds like an old fashioned car horn.

(17,505 posts)My friend Pam was a phone-aholic. She would lie in a hammock under this huge oak tree and answer and talk on one of those big portable "brick" phones .... this was the '80s.
Of course the mockingbird living in the tree learned the phone's ring.
I can hear Pam now... " Hello?...God Damn it!".... when she'd pick up the phone because the bird was imitating it.

(160,586 posts)It seems impossible one bird could create these sounds. It seems like a reminder to human we simply know almost nothing about our world, about life, about others. It should awaken people who learn about it, but what are the chances?
