Nasa turned to the public for assistance in naming the seven newly discovered planets.
It's all in the name
"Planet McPlanetface. Moonie McMoonface. Rocky McRockface."
These are just some of the names social media users suggested after Nasa sent out a tweet asking for #7Namesfor7NewPlanets in the Trappist-1 System.
Late last month, astronomers announced the discovery of seven Earth-sized planets orbiting a single star, some of which could be potentially habitable. It's hard enough to think of one name, but seven in one go is no easy feat. So Nasa's appeal for help was met with an outpouring of support, with 3,400 replies so far and several thousand retweets.
Popular TV and cartoon characters, both for children and adults, featured prominently among the proposed names.
"Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Chandler, Joey, Ross and Janice," one user said.
"Pooh, Piglet, Kanga, Tigger, Roo, Eeyore and Christopher," a UK-based tweeter chimed in.
And bringing the Seven Dwarfs into the spotlight, another proposed: "Bashful, Doc, Dopey, Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy and Grumpy."

(11,843 posts)The Elon Musk part is a girl suggesting that Tesla have an ad writing contest and the Trappist planet naming is crowd sourcing names for the planets. Other than asking for the public to do the work, the two stories appear unrelated. It's like someone inadvertently deleleted a header between the two stories.

(40,416 posts)The only reason why folks want to name planets is that our eight planets are named. However, there are now thousands of extrasolar planets discovered and are likely a trillion others in our galaxy.
So forgive astronomers if they do not name them all. Astronomical catalog entries will do fine. And don't get me started about star names.

(6,261 posts)Ha, I hadn't thought about that scam in years. "Why not name a star after her?" Whatever happened to them, I wonder?
One could almost admire the sheer audacity of it all.

(40,416 posts)Kind of like Who's Who, yet another scam, albeit a rather idiotic one. Not that naming all the stars isn't idiotic.
The Name a Star people make a lot of trouble for astronomers, and planetarium operators. "Show me my star!"
Sorry. You don't have a star. Nobody has a star.
BTW, do you want to buy some land on the Moon?
How about the Brooklyn Bridge?
