1 in 4 Americans Apparently Unaware the Earth Orbits the Sun

Does the Earth go around the sun, or does the sun go around the Earth?

When asked that question, 1 in 4 Americans surveyed answered incorrectly. Yes, 1 in 4. In other words, a quarter of Americans do not understand one of the most fundamental principles of basic science. So that's where we are as a society right now.

The survey, conducted by the National Science Foundation, included more than 2,200 participants in the U.S., AFP reports. It featured a nine-question quiz about physical and biological science and the average score was a 6.5.

And the fact that only 74 percent of participants knew that the Earth revolved around the sun is perhaps less alarming than the fact that only 48 percent knew that humans evolved from earlier species of animals.

Can this possibly be true? Just shoot me now.

that advanced the country. There are an awful lot of really stupid Americans.

Remember that religious faith is nothing more or less than a promise to continually support a narrative despite what any evidence might suggest.

3. Lack of education is the root of our problem right now...

The republicans "love the poorly educated" as Trump so famously said during his campaign. These are people who don't understand the cause and effect of good governance, who don't have the tools to think critically before they vote and have no comprehension of the Constitution and civil liberties (other than their right to own a gun).

No wonder they don't understand man made climate change and believe in "intelligent design."

12. And the GOP is working on lowering the education levels for everyone

Through supporting faith-based education and making it nearly impossible for ordinary folks to afford a college education (not that that's a requirement for critical thinking, but it's one big way that people can raise themselves up out of poverty).

4. I found the survey results and the other countries didn't do that great either

Europe isn't represented and they'd probably do better, but then I'd have thought Japan would be better too. Pretty shameful, though.

8. US was much worse on evolution

Only 48% of people in the US believe that humans developed from earlier species of animals, compared to 70% of people in Europe & 76% in Japan. The committee that regulates the Texas school books contribute to that one.
