Darkness to fall over North America from a total solar eclipse

https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/06/21/total_solar_eclipse_over_america/

America will witness, for the first time in 99 years, a total solar eclipse stretching from coast to coast on August 21.

The Sun, Moon and Earth will sit perfectly in a line. The Moon will block out the Sun, making the solar corona, a crown of hot plasma, visible. A shadow of darkness will be cast over the Earth in a 70-mile (112-kilometre)-wide swath.

Fourteen states – Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, and North and South Carolina – will be within the Moon’s umbral shadow and experience more than two minutes of darkness.

The eclipse will begin its sweep over Lincoln Beach, Oregon, at 9:05am PDT and make it to Charleston, South Carolina, at 2:48pm EDT. Those in the rest of the country – in the penumbral shadow – will see a partial eclipse.

A total solar eclipse crossed the Oregon coast just a few miles north of the one coming in August. But given the time of the year, the angle of the earth was different and the path of the full shadow angled northeast, passing through Idaho and Montana, then into Canada. I was planting trees on the north Oregon coast at that time. We piled into the crummy and drove to a headland close to Tillamook. February on the Oregon coast predictably was overcast and raining so there weren't many people there. The eclipse happened shortly after sunrise. Due to clouds, we didn't actually "see" either the sunrise or the eclipse. It did get light, then dark, then light again. We were the first people in the US to experience the eclipse that day. Simultaneously, at my house farther south, one of my milk goats was in labor. My partner was taking care of the place while I was planting. The goat delivered two white males, then at the darkest moment of the eclipse delivered a black female. We named her Penumbra.

Unfortunately, the darkness that befell our country back in November has and will last a lot longer than two minutes.

Unless you are very close to the track, you won't notice anything at all.

Columbia SC.
Early afternoon is usually clear that time of year, unless there's something tropical going on.
Looking forward to it.
