There Could Be a Scientific Reason Why Trump Can Sleep Just 4-5 Hours a Night (Science Alert)

Spoiler alert: there's not really a well-understood reason.

LYDIA RAMSEY, BUSINESS INSIDER
17 JAN 2018

***
Short sleepers, a group The Wall Street Journal once called the "sleepless elite," need only a short amount of sleep every night instead of the average seven to eight hours. Scientists estimate those individuals make up only about 1 percent of the population.
***
This sleeping behaviour is still a relatively new area of study, so a lot is unknown about short sleepers and their genetics.
***
Fu investigated traits relating to that family and others who came into the clinic. Soon, she learned that there were three types of people: early risers, night owls, and people who are somewhere in between.

Perhaps most importantly, she also learned that there were specific traits linked with all three types.

That work launched more than 20 years of studying these sleep behaviors to learn more about how people rest and how genetics play a role in that behavior.

"We know almost nothing about how sleep is regulated," Fu told Business Insider in 2015.

Even on weekends I wake up early. If I wake up after sleeping 4 hours, I might as well get up, because I'm not going to go back to sleep. About the only time I sleep longer than 6 hours is if I'm sick, and that doesn't happen very often.

CONCLUSIONS: Insomnia with short sleep duration is associated with increased odds of diabetes. Objective sleep duration may predict cardiometabolic morbidity of chronic insomnia, the medical impact of which has been underestimated.
