Secrets of the sea bed: Hunt for Stone Age site in North Sea

By Laurence Peter
BBC News

British and Belgian scientists are exploring the sea bed off Norfolk hoping to find evidence that Stone Age people lived there when it was still dry land.

In recent years, some trawler crews and researchers have found prehistoric animal bones and basic stone tools in North Sea sediment.

The team on the Belgian ship RV Belgica aims to map the Brown Bank area, a sand ridge about 30km (19 miles) long.

Mesolithic people are thought to have lived there in about 10,000-5,000BC.

Where I did oil charters on a crab boat around drilling rigs in 1984.

Because of the Bering Sea land bridge and lower ocean levels they had large areas of the Bering sea floor described as "A very high expectation of prior human habitation".

The Statement was about an inch and one half thick with maps and legends "descriptions" of what might be found and where.

All areas were in from what I remember now is around 200 feet of water or less, most crab fishing is done in waters of 100 fathoms (600 feet), I lived out there in the Aleutians for nearly 13 years and knew some of the old timers and heard many legends and first person story's.

One story was about finding a small rocky island that was used for burials and while looking around in the early 1900's found what the teller said was a tablet with what looked like Chinese writing on it.

Recently a belt buckle was found on the North Slope in an ancient midden (dump) that is said to be from China very very long ago.

And these finds were above sea level, who knows what's out there waiting to be found or never will be.

They have carbon dated material from the Aleutians from 11,000+ years ago and new finds happen each summer when digs can be attempted.

Very interesting.
