http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2012/04/120426-mars-new-lava-coils-volcanoes-ice-life-space-science/Large spirals on Mars, as seen by an orbiting spacecraft.
Hundreds of large spirals have been discovered on Mars, and scientists think the coiled features are evidence of a type of lava flow never before seen on the red planet.
If so, the spirals would suggest that volcanoesnot ice floes, as other experts believeshaped an unusual area near the red planet's equator.
Athabasca Valles is a region of flow channels and valleys covered with terrain plates, structures that show clear evidence of something fracturing and drifting across the planet's surface millions of years ago.
Scientists have been divided, however, as to whether the plates were made by the hardening of a massive lava flow or by icy "rafts"much like Arctic pack icefrom an ancient inland sea.

(6,736 posts)Sounds like they are thinking either lava flows or water/glaciers. I wonder if it were to have gotten cold enough for carbon dioxide ice/glaciers to have formed if they might have behaved in a different fashion that that would cause this? Like maybe a layer of CO2 ice, with geothermal heat below, causing it to turn to gas and seek escape. The swirls could be locations of holes in the CO2 ice, where the gasses rushed under pressure to get out?
