He was compelling before he went round the bend. I first saw him on our PBS station giving a lecture on the face on mars at one of the space centers in the early 90's before Art Bell.

Sounds like they are thinking either lava flows or water/glaciers. I wonder if it were to have gotten cold enough for carbon dioxide ice/glaciers to have formed if they might have behaved in a different fashion that that would cause this? Like maybe a layer of CO2 ice, with geothermal heat below, causing it to turn to gas and seek escape. The swirls could be locations of holes in the CO2 ice, where the gasses rushed under pressure to get out?
