They're sometimes called Shingle Urchins. That should get you and your friend on the right track.

Its something in the colobocentrotus genus, of that I'm sure. It's been 20+ years since this was my actual niche.

In Hawaii it is known as "kaupali" which translates as "cliff-clinging". It is found on wave-swept intertidal shores in the Indo-West Pacific, particularly on the shores of Hawaii.

Outstanding photo! Better than the ones on the websites that discuss the critter. Did your friend take it? It's a marketable image. In fact, framed prints of that would sell well, I'm very sure.
