Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumProgressive Xians vs. Non-Believers...
(I'm posting this morning because I'm taking a Non-Voluntary Day Off from work. Home repairs - 107 degrees and my A/C quit. Argh! Not that I'm complaining about a day off for any reason...)
So I've just been reading thru various posts in the Religion group and there seems to be a...disconnect.
Sometimes the progressive Xians talk about how much they support the rights of non-believers.
That must be in theory only. On some rarified, ethereal plane of Pure Rights or something.
Because other times, like when an atheist group protests a clear violation of church-state entanglement, all kinds of crap breaks out about those touchy, over-sensitive non-believers trampling the rights of the poor believers.
So when it comes to defending my rights as a non-believer, I have come up with this simple historo-photographic formula:
Progressive Xians:
Non-believers (excluding Faitheists, Accomodationists and other Brown-Nosers):

(3,622 posts)What I don't get is the theist apologists. There are several who claim to be atheists in the Religion forum but damn if I can see the difference between them and the theists.

(9,356 posts)The "I'm an atheist BUT..." crew.
And atheists who seem to believe in all the religious paraphernalia - spirits, souls, prayer etc. - except for a god.
SPIES NOTE - I'm not really implying anything here, just observing:
I work with several Republican atheists who sound a lot like those guys. Only atheister. They don't believe in any of the religious ruck.
They all despise how the Bible-thumpers have hijacked their party.
But they seem to have a huge blind spot when it comes to correlating "official Xianity" with how the Fundies DID hijack their party. To them, stuff like the Pledge or public crosses is no big deal.
They can't make the connection that's so obvious to some of us - those "no big deal" items reinforce the notion that the USA is a Xian nation and just provide cover for the extremists.
Very frustrating.

(18,219 posts)who is defending non-believers, then denouncing them? I see those posts too. I see Progressive Christians who defend the rights of non-believers. I see others who rip atheists a new one every chance they get. I am not sure that these are the same people, but I don't always pay attention to who says what.
