in all it's vomit-inducing shitiness.

The new Dodge Dart was moving up in the rankings of what I might buy if I need a car in the near future. This commercial bumped it down a few notches.

Unbelievable! I've never seen a more disgusting car commercial.

The fundies probably lapped it right up and went out and bought Dodges.

but ads like these are a huge mistake.

Lay off religion and borrowed-interest.

Google-fu failed me. Kept returning "quotes FROM Lee Greenwood." In which I am about as interested as "quotes from a potted plant," though those would probably be more useful.

Anyway, IIRC, when Bush/Gulf War II started and that shitty song was clogging up the airwaves again, some comedian said something like this:

"You know you suck when you only have one hit song, and it only gets played when a war starts."

He was a right wing master of cloying glurge, for those of you fortunate enough to have been born since he left radio.

Real ranchers around here are lucky to have a pickup truck from the previous decade. Pickups usually go through two or three urban cowboys before the ranchers can afford them on a used car lot.

Most of them relatives. Two farming uncles lived next door and always drove their pickups into the ground. The truck had to be seriously dead to get retired - these guys were old-school farmers with their own workshops where they could fix nearly anything.

They never sold or traded in the rusting carcasses, either; those got parked in the Back Forty. Just in case they could use some parts on their next truck...which was NEVER bought new, as you noted.

Just FTR, those trucks were always Chevys. So FOAD, flag-waving, Bible-thumping, Paul Harvey-fellating Chrysler.

One of those uncles also had a car. Until well into the 1950s, it was a Ford Model A (only built from 1928-31). There's a family yarn about a door flying open once on that Model A, almost sending Infant Onager and his Mom on a personal investigation into that whole God thing.

Then he got a '53 Chevy that he drove until well into the 1970s.

One of our farming neighbors had a gutted Model T Ford in his back yard. I tried to buy that thing from him repeatedly as a kid, but he wouldn't sell.

and babied the hell out of it. I vaguely remember riding in it once or twice while my mother sat white knuckled. My grandmother wasn't the best of drivers.

My family owned farmland in upstate NY, but it wasn't much suited to farming, so they went to sea and only retired there, most of them. I do know they grew grapes and made copious amounts of wine, there was a family story about salvaging barrels of it from a burned out house's basement, one of the barrels letting go and the cart horse drinking it and getting very, very drunk.

But I digress. A lot of the farm vehicles I saw down south weren't pickup trucks, those were too expensive. They were old cars that had been hacksawed down, everything back of the front seat becoming a wooden platform without sides, just holes to admit tie down ropes. With knobby tires, they were fine for delivering bales of hay to stock that was far afield, bags of feed and fertilizer from town to farm.

They'd probably be illegal to drive anywhere but on the farm, itself, these days.

Someone posted about complainers about the "farmer" ad spoiling their joy of life (such a delicate flower)
Now who is going to dislike, perhaps even comment about their dislike. Hmmmmm.
Atheists?
I got the disgusting "Sit down and shut up!" vibe from that.
/sigh
