Can you even believe it?

When they gave a presentation they told us we could consider it a huge benefit-like a raise.
I'm so glad I'm only four years from retirement.

(111,327 posts)and they came in very handy for the people who believed in that stuff. It took a lot of pressure off the rest of us. None of them was pushy about the god stuff, they'd have been fired if they had been.
It's probably not going to be the same in the civilian world. All I can say is keep a low profile and keep mumbling the time you have left as the calendars run out.

(3,622 posts)but in 2009 I was admitted twice for surgeries. The catholic hospital chaplains respected my request not to be visited upon but the second hospital I was admitted to was secular (affiliated with the University of Cincinnati) and the chaplain came into my room to check on me even though I made it clear on admission that I did not want to see a chaplain during my stay. Both hospitalizations were 3 days each. Go figure that a catholic hospital did it right but the secular hospital didn't!

(34,582 posts)I would politely state my objection. As long as he obeyed my wishes to leave I would not be upset.

(3,622 posts)but the hospitalization where the chaplain came to my room was the second hospitalization in 3 1/2 weeks and two major surgeries. I was not completely with the program but I did decline his "services" in a nice way. Even in my weakened condition it took me aback. The quality of care I received at the secular hospital was far superior to that of the catholic facility (long story not worth going into) and after discharge from the second hospital I let them know I was very pleased about my care compared to one of their competitors. I did not mention the chaplain's visit in my review of the hospital. It was not worth my effort and no harm was really done except for a little annoyance.

(101,352 posts)Rather than taking up their time with religious waffly questions, ask if they'll stand in line at the DMV for paperwork. Now that's a benefit ...

(5,352 posts)Based on that website, it looks as if the company has to pay to have chaplains available and it isn't as if there aren't churches everywhere you look. (That's the way it is down here in the Bible Belt, at least.) That's money that could be better spent elsewhere, imo. If they're seriously arguing it could be considered a benefit like a raise, it's a benefit that primarily applies to the religious people in any given workplace. I'd be pissed if they did something like that where I work.
And I did a little Googling just now and guess which school offers an M.A. in Marketplace Chaplaincy: Liberty University, founded by the late Jerry Falwell. (It's actually one of several schools that offer that course of study, but Liberty being associated with it should be a huge red flag.)

(17,505 posts)If they complain, tell then it's just like having a chaplain and good for them to give you a raise. They can have your share of the chaplain

(12,132 posts)80`90%? Even with a couple hours over-time a week I'm still under 25% of my time spent at work. Factor in PTO for a year and it's even less.
So I am terrible at math or they are liars again.

(12,132 posts)I mean, I know I am not great at math - I struggled mightily with Jr High Algebra (Although, later. geometry and trig were so easy I never got under a hundred % on any assignment or test - go figure)
but it's good to know this seemingly basic calculation didn't defeat me!

(3,622 posts)I have a home office and the company I work for is in Ft. Washington, PA. They don't have chaplains at any of their offices. The last thing I need is someone hassling me about their superstitions.
The nice thing about the company I work for is good health insurance. We only pay a reasonable deductible, everything else is covered. Good dental and eye insurance. Prior to this job I was self-employed for 20 years and had to use my wife's health insurance plan and it really sucked (inHumana). It is sad that this country can't do better.

(18,219 posts)Will this "chaplain" be bothering everyone, or will they just be there in case someone needs comfort from them and seeks them out? If he came near me, I would let him know that all I want is a raise.
Then again, everyone at work already knows not to pull the god thing on me. I have never hid the fact that I am not a believer.

(2,603 posts)My company was bought out by a crazy-religious private company about 3 years ago. I am 4 years away from retirement, so changing jobs at this stage of the game would be crazy.
So I grin and bear it.
"We honor God in everything we do" is in our mission statement.
I just put my head down and do my work.
Somehow, though, as crazy as the leadership in this company are, I still was rather stunned by on-site chaplains.

(5,352 posts)anytime I see a business with a Jesus fish sticker on its door or vehicle(s) or a business that mentions God in their mission statement, I always think of this famous William S. Burroughs quote: Never do business with a religious son-of-a-bitch. His word ain't worth a shit -- not with the Good Lord telling him how to fuck you on the deal.

(34,582 posts)for a local roofing company. Across the back window it said "right come to us from god, not the state". I made a mental note never to let them touch my roof. The stupid thing is, these fuckers worship soldiers, who are instruments of the state. Wouldn't vets be offended by this statement?
