Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumGaaah. Religous yard signs.
Any of you have these showing up in your city?
Since the 2012 election, we've had a bunch of these around town. Until a few weeks ago our neighbor had one that said something like "Religious Liberty, Our Most Cherished Freedom".
They seem to have originated at one of the Catholic churches since I saw the same thing as an enormous vinyl banner in front of their church.
Now I'm seeing "Keep Christ in Christmas" popping up.
It's taken me years to get back to enjoying Christmas, but sometimes these Christians can take the fun out of it.

Edit. found a photo of the original ones. Also an article. Appears this was a Nebraska thing that has spilled into my state (IA).
They are outstanding banners, Fr. Ryan Lewis, pastor of Omahas St. Thomas More Parish, told EWTN News Oct. 26. I thought the message was incredible. The people in my parish are all fired up about concerns about attacks on religious liberty as it relates to the current administration and the HHS mandate.
One of the banners reads: Religious Liberty: Our Most Cherished Freedom. The 4-by-12 foot banner also bears the website address of the Archdiocese of Omaha, though the archdiocese is not a financial backer of the project.

Mormons, mostly.
I vaguely remember seeing those on the news. And wasn't there a "Religious Freedom" sign done with the Romney "R" ?
Edit: this isn't the one but it was similar to this.

(111,261 posts)are a lot of people with plaster saints out in the front garden. Most of them are hideous, but at least they don't advertise the homeowner is a complete fool.
Think of these signs as a warning of who to avoid--or to put on your sucker list should you have to turn to crime.
I have a St. Francis statue in my garden! Watch it!
I like it. It is not one of those really tacky ones, but it is there. And it hasn't got any religious connotations to me since I was an atheist when I got it. I just liked it.

(111,261 posts)I have a junk sculpture cat I'd have out there only somebody would very likely steal it.
St Joseph is the really risky one since people swipe them to bury head down in the front yard so their houses will sell.

(18,219 posts)I have trouble growing plants, except for things that spread and take over, so I decorate with crap. I have some cool cats. And several flamingos. No St Joseph though, head up or ass up. If I go to sell the house, I will try that, if I can find one to swipe....I am sure that it will help. I mean what saint wouldn't be flattered to be buried head down in a front yard!

(18,219 posts)for years. Most of them are wooden, plain white with black print, and they are all scripture verses. Then there are all the churches with all the crosses on their lawns with signs about abortions. And we even have a lot of billboards with religious sayings on them.
Seems to me that your area's signs will disappear sooner than ours will, since they have been there for years. Apparently, yours are not meant to be permanent.
I am always tempted to send letters to these people about all the public proclamations, using Bible verses of my own to denounce them.

(49,990 posts)When I drive north and west of here I see them a lot. Usually hand painted. "prepare to meet thy God" "Choose Life" etc etc
Saw a pro life one painted on the side of a semi trailer parked in a field this fall. Paid for by the Knights of Columbus.

(18,219 posts)I think that the only reason that they are in business these days is to fight choice.
This is a semi-rural to rural area, so you are right about it seeming to be a rural thing.

(1,918 posts)coworkers have been talking about keeping Christ in Christmas, so I put up a wallpaper on my PC for "keep Thor in Thursday." I'd live one that says something about saturnalia or the winter solstice, if anyone has any ideas.

(9,356 posts)Sometimes distributed by local churches, which tend to be a uniform size/message like you mention in the OP. Other times they are crudely hand-lettered with the homeowner's personal rant about prayer in school, abortion or our gawdless Kenyan President.
Then there are the billboards. HUGE billboards featuring suspiciously blue-eyed Jesi, commands to attend church, read the Bible, etc.
Happily - at least for some of us - the religious billboards along Interstate-85 are probably outnumbered by the billboards advertising topless/strip joints.
As Ogden Nash wrote:
God's plan had a hopeful beginning,
But Man spoiled his chances by sinning.
We trust that the story, will end in God's glory,
But for right now, the other side's winning.
