I mean one of the Big Ten is "don't say shit that isn't true" (in modern parlance, I suppose).
So is deliberate distortion of facts considered a lie? I think it is.
So why do so many religionists, when faced with facts they don't like, are inconvenient, or that challenge their Deeply Held Beliefs, feel that it is perfectly acceptable to deliberately distort facts to fit their view of the world, or their view of how the world should be?
Isn't that lying? Isn't that making God sad when they do that? Isn't that hypocritical to lie when discussing religion?
I think that lying is wrong, but not because it makes God sad. It's just a bad thing to do. Dishonesty goes against the social contract we have with each other. Be truthful or be silent
Don't just pull shit out your ass and be all like "oh yeah well here's a big ol lie" and act like no one is going to call your ass on that shit.
hypocrites. all of them

(18,219 posts)In fact, it makes God cry.
But don't you know by now that if anything in the Bible contradicts what these people do, they just ignore it. Or maybe they feel that the end justifies the means. Or maybe the lies that they tell are what they really believe are the truth.....you know, like they delude themselves about God being their personal protector.

(1,918 posts)You are so right. Actually, I have heard so many more lies coming from believers than non-believers that I am starting to wonder if they actually follow any of the commandments.

(18,219 posts)Doncha know about the Trinity. If Jesus wept, God wept, because they are both the same person. Or something like that....makes sense to me.

(1,918 posts)She just looked at me like I was nuts. Apparently she had a hard time accepting they could be the same person. Yeah, I don't blame her. It sounded like god committed suicide to her.
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)but it DOES sound like suicide. It is a little hard to understand.

(1,918 posts)so she simplified it in her own head. After she mentioned suicide, I couldn't help but think she may be on to something. Part of my deconversion actually.

"What harm would it do, if a man told a good strong lie for the sake of the good and for the Christian church
a lie out of necessity, a useful lie, a helpful lie, such lies would not be against God, he would accept them."

The words of Eusebius Pamphili, a Roman historian (c. AD 263339) states in his Book Evangelical Preparation:
"It may be lawful and fitting to use fictions [falsehood] as a medicine, and for the benefit of those [Christians] who want to be deceived."
He was the first to "notice" the infamous Testimonium Flavianum of Josephus the historian whose account apologetics claim "proves" the existence of Jesus Christ 300 years earlier... and he is thought to have treated Josephus' works with his "medicinal fictions". Studies have put great doubt on the "Christ" references in Josephus' works because of writing style inaccuracies and abrupt cadence that does not fit any of his works or even in the sentences that those references are found. They were "inserted" at a later date.
Even historical references Christians rely on impregnated with untruths. And as for at least one man who is the founder of protestant Christianity... he seems to have been a premeditated lier by admission. Seems ironic.
