Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumSometimes the guys at work are pretty funny
I was late for work because I had some errands to do this morning. As I was finishing up the errands and heading that way I started getting more and more desperate texts and emails; "Hurry up! The phone system went down!" "Nobody can call in or out! Ack hurry!"
so I hustled on up to work and as I was parking the car I got a text that the system came back up.
So of course I stroll on in claiming responsibility for just showing up and making the phones work again and one of the network guys says "Well no wonder you're so lucky - Since you're an atheist, Friday the 13th works the opposite for you! It's like your holy day!"
and then we went to lunch at a new British Pub where my good luck continued as they had Fuller's ESB on draft.
Happy Friday the 13th, fellow Atheists!

(18,219 posts)Friday the 13th, your holy day, is almost over. WTF. People are really misinformed about atheists, aren't they? I have one of the bosses at work engaging me in discussions about how my mind works and how I can live not believing. I think that he sincerely wants to understand, but it is exhausting.

(12,132 posts)I totally understand that from long conversations with my brother. He no longer even pretends to try and understand me - he just waits for his chances push god. But since he's my brother I try and guide him along anyway. Literally wears me out.

(18,219 posts)is that I don't care if anyone understands. I don't want them to try to get inside my brain and see how it works. They believe for whatever reason, and I do not believe for my own reasons. It is just that simple. I have just got an email from that boss who was explaining that my problem is that I am trying to make it an intellectual pursuit, when it has to be a spiritual pursuit. WTF. How can I NOT make everything an intellectual pursuit? But that certainly is a way to convince me that it is my fault for not believing....I am just not trying.
Bah.

(9,356 posts)Running errands today, I bumped into a new store - "All Books $10 Or Less."
Now I should never go into such a store without a personal keeper. Preferably one who will slap my hand and say, "No! Bad Onager! You got enough books already. Resist!!!"
But of course I went in anyway. I've always believed the only way to resist temptation is to give in to it.
Immediately saw ONE copy of Susan Jacoby's book "Freethinkers: A History of American Secularism." Hardcover. For $6.
The original price on the dust jacket was $27.50. Sold!
Other finds: a coffee-table sized history of the Ford Thunderbird ($4) and an operational study of the German WWII Stuka dive bomber ($3).
Maybe Fri. 13 IS our lucky day...

(12,132 posts)I'm gonna look around here for one.
And I practiced that resisting temptation by having a second beer at lunch. Soooooooo tasty. And no more temptation!

(18,219 posts)that we don't have to be delivered from temptation, huh?

(12,132 posts)And it rocketed this place straight to the top of my go-to places. They had a bunch of other great beers to try in the future too.

(12,448 posts)I had no idea it was our "holy day"!
Strnage that someone would even have a concept of an atheist holy day. The whole point is that we don't have holy days. (But we do have fun days, give to charity days, volunteer days)
