On my Facebook feed today - 163 references to religion/gawd/other silly crap/etc.

For shits and giggles, I decided to count the number of references to gawd or jebus or religion on my Facebook feed. The rules were simple: 1) the religious reference had to be in an original post, responses didn't count; 2) posts expressing sentiments like "god bless so-and-so for helping me till the garden" weren't counted; 3) the post had to happen today (4/15/2014).

What's fucked up is that I hit 163, and hadn't reached the end of the feed for today - I gave up after a while. Also, there's still at least 5 hours left in the day for people to post more dumbfuckery. Oh, and I only have 215 friends, which averages out to be about .75 references to bullshit from each friend.

Anyone who says that religion isn't an omnipresent source of horseshit isn't paying attention. I'm going to punch the next person who tells me that I just need to "lighten up and get over it, things aren't that bad."

PS: I counted zero posts relating to atheism or skepticism (although I'm a member of the Skeptics Society, so I'll probably get a post from them later on this week). Fortunately though, I did have a bunch of woo-related nonsense to break up the religious monotony, so there's that.

Most of my friends are like-minded individuals and represent the best in society as far as atheism is concerned.

I don't have hypocrites as friends. Thank gawd.

And a lot of my friends and family on Facebook are card-carrying LDS cult members. In-your-face religiosity isn't part of their being, it IS their being.

and my thought process is pretty much like (in this order)

seriously? Tragedy porn for god?
WHAT THE HOLY FUCKING FUCK
seriously? God cares about facebook likes/shares
Who the FUCK is this person sharing this shit
WHAT THE FUCK AM I LOOKING AT

And with it came the posts like "gawd was looking out for that person", and "blessed be" (from my Catholic friends).

I'm thinking the whole time (but not saying because unlike the way that-other-group portrays us, I'm never in-your-face or "fundamentalist" about my atheism); anyway, I'm thinking along the lines of "you dumb-fuck, what was your gawd thinking when he killed the people who DID make the flight?" Of course, that just shows that gawd "works in mysterious ways."

BTW, I'm going to use Tragedy Porn. Maybe even on Facebook...

*but not for those other schmucks who weren't so lucky.

I remember on the Boob Toob during I think the beltway sniper attacks and they were interviewing people who were nearby when someone got killed and this woman says "Oh GOD was watching over me!!!" and I was like "what about the poor fuck who just got his nogging blown off by a psychopath?" That's the first time I remember realizing how horribly offensive that phrase and phrasing is. "God's watching over me" because I survived a tornado/hurricane/disaster. BUt for those who died...eh. Sorry. GOD WAS TOO BUSY WATCHING OVER MEEEEEMEMEMEMEMEMEME

and "god bless so-and-so", and still got so many. I would not have excluded those, since they are also part of the experience. It is a bad time, with the Boston Marathon anniversary and all the prayers. I hope you did count the "prayers for....." in your count.

The more that I have become aware, the more I realize just how saturated our society is in religion. I have gotten to the point of cringing every time I an encountered by religious references. I cringe a lot these days.

Maybe I have a subconscious filter that helps me skip by most of them, but it's insane how much there actually was once I consciously counted it.

What's especially aggravating are the posts from kids (I have lots of young nieces, nephews and cousins) along the lines of "repost this gawd quote picture and gawd will answer your prayers today." There's so much wrong with crap like that, it's almost impossible to even start.

It is all those stupid emails that threaten or promise if you forward, and adults do it, that make me shake my head. We had chain mail back in the prehistoric days when I was in junior high....then we grew out of it. And you can still have hope for the kids, I believed in god back then too.

I despise cell phones and text messaging, and I don't have many email addresses, so I use Facebook to contact people. I'm using it almost like Contact Management software on steroids.

Plus, Facebook is where I post my good pro-LGBT stuff (it really pisses off the natives); my atheism is still in the closet, but my pro-gay rights beliefs are out in the open.

Apr 2014

After I posted this last night, I ventured back to Facebook and was surprised to find a post from a Mormon friend making a strong argument for gay rights. It was probably 5,000 words, and one of the best written pieces I've ever read from a believer defending gay rights and attacking the church (in EvolveOrConvolve land, "the church" is the LDS church) for its views on gay marriage.

So there was at least one bright spot amongst all the overtly religious horseshit.
