Atheists & Agnostics
Related: About this forumI found out at work this week that I'm a "good Christian"
Every year, my department at work gets together during the holidays and adopts a homeless family and buys them gifts and food and donates old items like Nintendos, etc. We usually get a list of 4 or 5 families with basic descriptions; "family one is dealing with the death of the father from cancer this year, has 3 children ages 4, 7, and 11, and needs clothing and maybe some toys"; "family two lost their home and vehicle after both mom and dad lost their job. They have two small children and a dog and would like bus passes, a coffee maker, and educational materials." We then vote by email which family we think should be the benefactor then buy the gifts or donate money that's delivered to the family sometime before Christmas.
Whatever the story, it's always fucking heart-breaking to read, and even more heart-breaking when the department can only scrounge up a couple hundred bucks and some old used clothing. Hell, we spend more than that on our Christmas parties, and many of the people in the department make good six-figure salaries.
Because of the shitty turnout (we've got a lot of "compassionate" conservatives in the department), a couple of us engineers met with the lady from the program separately and sponsored our own family. We bought them literally everything on their list, and we delivered it in person. We just thought it was shitty that you've got people buying second homes and new vehicles with their annual bonus money, and they can't even be bothered to chip in 10 bucks to help out someone in need.
We kept quiet about what we did, but the lady called to setup this year's sponsorship and asked the person who puts it together if we were going to sponsor two families again this year. Long story short, the department found out what happened, and my boss told me that I'm a "good Christian". It offended the fuck out of me - as if one needs to be a Christian to be good. As if we did what we did because of some precondition to getting into heaven or to prevent an eternity burning in hot lakes of fire.
For those believers who think it's a good idea to use this phrase as a compliment: think about it before you say it. You may be seriously offending someone. For example, one of the engineers in the group is from India - he's not a Christian, but still helped to make a family's life a little better during a rough time in their lives. Calling him a "good Christian" is implicitly questioning his motives.

On the other hand I do wonder why the churches the Christians attend do not say that the tithes for the holiday season can go to the troubled families.

(6,452 posts)My parents have paid more than $300,000 in tithing to the Mormon church in their lives, money that could have gone to their retirement. Instead, they're both near 70, still working, have less than $30k in the bank, and a house that's under water. It's impossible that the Mormon church, a billion dollar corporation, somehow made better use of that $300k than my parents would have. Instead, they'll eventually reach a point where their children have to support them financially, so it negatively affects at least two generations.

(4,074 posts)They are in there late 50's but they have nothing saved for retirement but continue to pay to the LDS church. They are severely under water in there condo (actually largely due to water. Their complex was underwater in a flood and rebuilt but because of threats of future floods the condo is worth about a quarter of what they paid for it)

(10,597 posts)... and what they say tells you so much about them. They could have said you was most kind and generous, a credit to your community, etc., etc. Heck, could they have meant it as a snark? You know there are some people who look down their noses at those who are generous... "folks" who are smitten by the Me-Me-Me/I-got-mine Reagan complex.
You're good people. Carry on.

(31,119 posts)In our culture, for many people GOOD and CHRISTIAN are synonymous.
Also, many people, if somebody's atheist or agnostic, regard them as if they were a sex offender.
As if people who profess to be Xians don't steal, lie, commit adultery, etc., as much as anyone else.

"We should give the kids warm clothes, not toys. That would be more practical."
"Jebus, Mrs. Scrooge. It's Christmas. We can afford to give them both."
My former employee had one of those programs. You're right, the stories you hear are truly heartbreaking. I was about to post a Potentially Derailing Rant, but will save that for elsewhere. For once...

(18,312 posts)I've been told both, that doing something meant I was a good Christian, and doing something made me "very white" or whatever the fuck they're trying to convey.
The strange thing is, that neither thing I did was something that was inherent to only Christians, or white people. Also, I come from a long line of white, pasty, red-headed, freckled people who tend to drink heavily. To tell me "that's mighty white of you"....it's so stupid. of COURSE it's white of me. I'm white. Anything I do is "White," just as anything I do is "female," "bleach-blonde," or "green eyed." To ascribe a charitable act as something that is solely the purview of those that accept Christ into their heart, and/or those that lack any meaningful amount of melanin is just....stupid. And offensive.
I find that the same people who think nothing of calling you mighty white or a good christian get *so* offended when you tell them that something positive they did was "mighty black of them" or that it makes them a good Satanist. Oh, why would that be? Why would it be offensive to ascribe a race or a religion to a good thing? I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND

I just ignore such phrases as "reflexive neutral religiosity" or something. Like when you sneeze.
But being naturally cranky and suspicious, I imagined getting home and hearing a loud knock on the door...
"Mr. Onager, LAPD. You're under arrest. We have camera footage from a parking lot. It shows you aiding and abetting a notorious ring of shoplifters who have been working the neighborhood..."
Curmudgeoness
(18,219 posts)I know that I cringe every time someone says that, but I also just ignore it. "God bless you" seems mild to me and probably it is a reflexive comment....no harm, no foul. Now if they were to say "thank God you came to help", I might have to tell them that it had nothing to do with God.
