Religious privilege/entitlement - does it exist on DU?

This is a helpful little article:
http://atheism.about.com/od/churchstate/p/ReligiousPriv.htm

The key paragraph, to me, is this one:

In significant ways, religious privilege is what is known in the social sciences as a “nonconscious ideology.” This means it is perpetuated in ways that people aren’t conscious of. The very environment which structures their lives and assumptions about life also reinforces the assumption that religion is and should be treated with greater deference, respect, and favoritism than other beliefs. Unpacking these assumptions and revealing them is critical to ending religious privilege.

Given that description, I think we can say without a doubt that religious privilege exists on DU.

I think that's the 'danger' from religious privilege on DU. One can see from the results from juries that, especially in cases where the alert leads to a quite involved situation with some history the religious side will "win". Often, I feel, because of a reluctance of jury members - especially American ones - to be seen to criticize the believers. Almost as if their friends and family members were looking over their shoulder as they cast their vote.

It is everywhere, all the time, kind of like god.

When you have people willing to defend the RCC after the way it has acted in relation to pedophilia, and it is not called out by everyone else, that is religious privilege. When you have people saying nasty things to/about atheists, and they are not chastised by everyone else, that is religious privilege. When juries hide posts by atheists at a much higher rate than posts by Christians, even when the atheist post is not close to the rudeness of the Christian post, that is religious privilege.

The denials that the privilege exists at all are eerily similar. Much like the arguments against Equal marriage are eerily similar to the ones made opposing inter-racial marriage back in the day.

I'd get mail from a Mod:
Could you change your signature. we've been getting complaints about it.

I've NEVER had a derogatory signature about Religion.

that says you think religion is delusion, that you think god/gods/profits are a fantasy, or that you see religion as evil and see how fast you get a jury alert.

But I'm not the most active member, and I don't want to say "Yes, there's a problem." without evidence to back it up. Is there a way that we could take a look at jury flags and reports? Because while I *feel* like there's a pro-religious (specifically, pro Christian) bias in jury reporting and post hiding, I don't have any evidence other than anecdotal. I don't even know how much transparency is involved in the jury process, even though I've been on a few.

If we could look at the history of jury reporting and decision making on religious/atheist topics, then we as a group could either start pushing for changes, or if there really was no problem we examine why we feel that there is.

But we do know there are some individuals so wrapped up in their own superiority complex they feel a need to read every post in this group and alert on anything that might have a chance of being hidden.

or that you see religion as evil and see how fast you get a jury alert. (twice for me)
-
Pedophilia, burning at the cross, genocide. It's not evil if God decrees it. Besides, religion serves free soup, therefore all that evil stuff is overshadowed.

Which can justify ANYTHING in the mind of the believer.

That's why religious belief is not acceptable.
